Episode Title: "The Return of Jimmy Blackhorse"
Original Air Date: 04/28/1998
Grammy Award-Winning Country Singer Trisha Yearwood Guest Stars, In Her First Dramatic Role for Television.
Members of the JAG team encounter resistance from Navajo tribal elders when they insist on DNA testing to verify that human remains are those of heroic Navajo "code-talker" Jimmy Blackhorse, who has been missing since World War II. Forensic pathologist Lt. Cmdr. Teresa Coulter (country singer Trisha Yearwood) joins Harm and Mac on the case.
The Navajo elders consider it a sacrilege to tamper with the remains of the dead and, furthermore, the Navajo medicine woman is certain that the remains do not belong to the esteemed Blackhorse. While the veracity of scientific evidence is argued against that of tribal custom and the metaphysical, Teresa finds herself falling for Harm and putting the entire assignment in jeopardy.
Country star Trisha Yearwood makes her acting debut in a moving story about the conflict between science and belief. Bodily remains discovered in New Zealand are identified as those of a missing Navajo code-talker, and the Pentagon makes plans to name a ship after the WWII vet. But a medicine woman (Betty Carvalho) contends that the remains are not her brother-in-law, citing a dark spirit instead of the light one she knew. A sympathetic forensic pathologist (Yearwood) suggests a DNA test, but the Navajos reject the idea as sacrilegious. Ultimately, Harm and Mac are sent to the discovery site to find out more about the soldier's final days.
