Subject: [JAGniks] Spoilers "Port Chicago" 4/9A Sailor Wants His Mutiny Charges Erased on "JAG" (4/9/02)
"Port Chicago" -- A survivor of the disastrous 1944 Port Chicago explosion asks the Secretary of the Navy to clear all mutiny charges from his service record and those of his shipmates, on JAG, Tuesday, April 9 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.
Jeannot Szwarc directed the episode from a script by Don McGill.
In 1944, in the midst of World War II, a disastrous explosion rocked the U.S. Navy's Port Chicago near San Francisco, killing more than 350 sailors, most of them African-Americans.
Following the blast, a group of 50 sailors refused to return to work until changes were made to assure their safety. They were charged with mutiny and court martialed, but later their convictions were reversed.
Now, surviving sailor William McBride wants his record and those of all the other "mutineers" cleared. Asked to handle the investigation discreetly, Cmdr. Turner discovers that an injustice was done and goes head-to-head with Lt. Singer in the courtroom.
Meanwhile, Harm goes house shopping with Lt. Sims.

A survivor of the disastrous 1944 Port Chicago explosion asks the Secretary of the Navy to clear all mutiny charges from his service record and those of his shipmates.
A stateside World War II disaster is revisited in this well-written episode.
In 1944, an explosion at the Port Chicago naval munitions base in California killed 320 men, most of whom were black. After the incident, many sailors refused to work under the unsafe conditions and 50 were court-martialed for mutiny. The men were allowed to return to the Navy when President Truman commuted their sentences after the war.
This episode centers on a fictional member of that group: retiree Aubrey McBride (Carl Gordon), who is demanding a new court-martial, hoping to have the conviction overturned so his record can be cleared. But if he's found guilty, the 76-year-old man will return to prison. Cmdr. Sturgis Turner: Scott Lawrence.
